The Unfortunate State of Power Integrity in Space Systems

by Steve Sandler. Picotest and AEi Systems, YouTube, Apr 27 2017

Focus:
As he has done in previous works, in this 14 minute video Steve Sandler debunks the myth that power integrity does not apply to power supply engineers, including those who design voltage regulators and dc-dc converters. He reviews the fundamentals of power integrity, power distribution networks, why impedance matching is required within the PDN, and why it all matters to the power supply engineers. But there are many details here you may not have seen before, such as an explanation of the three capacitive decoupling schemes and how they affect transient response, FPGA power considerations including the two kinds of dynamic currents, why we need to know about internal power supply compensation for PI. Based on a presentation given at the 2017 Space Power Workshop, this video also includes specific examples of space- grade voltage regulators and power converters with design flaws that will make them difficult or impossible to use in applications. There's also a simulation of how a single ceramic cap can increased conducted EMI by 20 dB. Steve provides guidance on what power supply engineers need to know about PI and where they can learn more.
