Focus:
Magnetic component manufacturer Triad Magnetics’ 5-page introduction to inductors
explains conceptually how they work and the different elements of their construction
that influence how they perform and where they are used. Described as an “eBook,” which
requires registration to download, this article introduces the
different core materials and shapes, common-mode versus differential-mode types, wire
and winding factors, and packaging options. Special attention is paid to toroids and
their pros and cons. There’s almost no math here save for a few basic equations. But
then, this introductory piece does not seem intended to teach inductor design, but
rather to explain the different options for materials and physical construction as an
aid to those who will be specifying inductors. This guide should be especially
helpful for students or new engineers who have some knowledge of how inductors work,
but are unfamiliar with the practical aspects of how real inductors are specified and
manufactured.
