Understanding the EMI characteristics of high-frequency power converters is essential since the
EMI filters required for regulatory compliance typically occupy a significant portion of space
within the system. This part 2 article offers insight into dc-dc converter conducted EMI
behavior by explaining sources and propagation paths for differential mode (DM) and common mode
(CM) conducted emissions and how passive filtering is used to attenuate these noise components.
Use of passive and active circuitry for DM and CM noise separation from the total noise
measurement is described, and a boost converter example is used to highlight the main CM noise
conduction paths in an automotive application.
