This article discusses the benefits and challenges of using distributed power in a
factory setting. It reviews the history of modular system design whereby “PLCs, I/O
and other control equipment [are moved] closer to the input and output devices.” Then
it compares the use of the newer, IP67-rated standalone power supplies with the
original modular power supply option, DIN rail supplies, and gives an example
illustrating how the IP67 rated supplies can reduce overall costs, while saving space.
