Focus:
Temperature sensors have many uses including measuring the temperature in a power semiconductor device in order to rapidly identify damage to the component. This article presents a simplified technique for direct conversion of the analog signal from a temperature sensor into a digital signal with proportional frequency using a GreenPAK configurable mixed-signal IC. This direct conversion from temperature to frequency eliminates the need for costly analog-to-digital converters and allows digital signal transmission, which is more reliable than analog. In addition to explaining the design and operation of this temperature-to-frequency converter circuit, which use a thermistor as the temperature sensor, this article offers links to the GreenPAK design files needed to configure the IC. Two variants of the converter are described and their expected performance is compared to experimental results to demonstrate their accuracy.
