Focus:
Along with the acceleration in the adoption of electrical vehicles (EVs), the demand for
fast charging infrastructure is increasing. This article series aims to help designers
address this challenge by describing the design and development of a 25-kW fast dc charger
which serves as a modular building block for chargers with outputs ranging from tens to
hundreds of kilowatts. The 25-kW fast charger block is based on SiC power integrated
modules (PIMs) and other components from ON Semiconductor. Here in part 1, the members of
ON Semiconductor’s multi-disciplinary engineering team who are developing this charger
design are introduced; basic architectural, electrical and functional requirements for the
charger are discussed; the design and development process is described, and topics to be
covered in this series are outlined.
