The Basics of Conducted Emissions Testing for Switch Mode Power Supply Designs

by Shane O’Connor, Magnetics Applications Design Engineer, Bourns, Power Systems Design, May 29 2021

Focus:
Written by an application engineer at a magnetics company, this short article offers an introduction to pre-compliance testing of power converters as required by CISPR 25 for conducted emissions. The basic test circuit including the LISN is explained, CISPR emissions limits are given, and measurement results are presented and discussed for an example converter using a Bourns HCTSM8 push-pull transformer driven by a TI SN6501 driver. Not a lot of details are given on the test setup, but this is an overview, and it also is meant to highlight the performance of the driver and transformer.
