Focus:
An efficient and commercially viable power generating suspension system (PGSS) enabled
with a power generating strut (PGS) and other system components can harvest energy created
from a moving vehicle. Using a new fractional slot concentric winding (FSCW) linear
generator design with a mechanical arm in a PGSS allows for energy harvesting at levels
that provide substantial value. Leveraging this PGSS with intuitive modifications can
eliminate the need for diesel fuel used to power refrigerated trailers or reduce the size
of the battery in battery-powered refrigerated trailers. This 28-page article describes
the overall power generating suspension system including characterization of random roads,
linear actuator design, power electronic conversion and boosting, and system control. The
focus here is mainly on the machine design and a novel mechanical magnification is
described that increases strut linear velocity and reduces the force level by an inverse
proportion. However, the latter sections discuss the power electronics function, first
with a three-phase rectifier and boost converter, and alternatively with a Vienna
rectifier.
