Focus:
Magnetic components operated as transformers, like inductors, have maximum power ratings.
But as was the case with inductors, the maximum power handled by the transformer is not
optimal for sizing the transformer. Here in part 3 (the last part), the same analysis
which the author applied to inductors in parts 1 and 2 is extended to transformers. Once
again, this article derives expressions for design power ratios for each PWM-switch
configuration. The main differences in the analysis for transformers versus inductors
relate to the differences in the waveforms seen by transformers vs. those seen by
inductors. This applies both to the shape of the waveforms and the influence of the
transformer turns ratio. The author concludes by discussing how the derived formulas
explain some tradeoffs in converter design that result from specifying a wide input
voltage range.
