When stepping down a battery's 3.6 V to levels such as 1.8 V and 1.5 V the use of a switching regulator in combination with a split-rail low-dropout linear regulator (LDO) makes it possible to generate these two voltage rails with high efficiency while still maintaining a small footprint.
