Focus:
Flyback converters are popular in offline battery chargers and system housekeeping
supplies—or any applications requiring system isolation and low cost. This two-part
article explains how to design the flyback converter’s coupled inductor. This part 1 is a
review of magnetic theory and foundational design calculations. It defines magnetic
parameters and conversion factors; presents equations for inductance, magnetic path
length, magnetic force (Ampere’s Law), and flux density (Faraday’s Law); it discusses B-H
curves, permeability, inductance and saturation; and explains a method for determining
core loss. With regard to windings, it provides equations for determining ac and dc
winding losses and whether a winding will fit on a bobbin; and it discusses interleaving
of windings.
