Winding Turn Lengths And Areas For Magnetic Components (Part 2): Square Windows

by Dennis Feucht, Innovatia Laboratories, Cayo, Belize, How2Power Today, Feb 13 2026

Focus:
In the design of transformers and inductors, winding lengths and areas are required as part of any design procedure. Winding resistance varies proportionally with winding length, and for a given number of turns, the wire size that fits the allotted winding area is calculated from the geometrically-derived available area. Part 1 of this article derived winding lengths and areas for cores with round windows. This part 2 derives the equivalent design formulas for square (or nearly square) windows such as those of EE, EI, and EFD cores.
