New Energy Standards Banish Linear Supplies

The California Energy Commission’s energy efficiency standards for external power supplies, which went into effect in 2006, imposed requirements that could not be readily met by linear power supplies. Switched-mode power supplies can meet the standards, but careful attention must be paid to the different sources of losses in the supplies. Some useful tips are provided to help designers meet the CEC standard and also achieve low cost designs.
