Flyback and SEPIC converters are popular single-switch solutions for applications where input voltage varies above and below the output voltage. But both topologies usually employ a transformer which may be too tall for space-constrained applications.An alternative approach uses two low-profile inductors together with a SEPIC coupling capacitor that acts like a transformer core, transferring energy between the inductors. In addition to the height benefit, this approach simplifies magnetic component selection versus a conventional SEPIC or flyback.
