Focus:
Flyback and SEPIC converters are popular single-switch solutions for applications where input voltage varies above and below the output voltage. But both topologies usually employ a transformer which may be too tall for space-constrained applications. An alternative approach uses two low-profile inductors together with a SEPIC coupling capacitor that acts like a transformer core, transferring energy between the inductors. In addition to the height benefit, this approach simplifies magnetic component selection versus a conventional SEPIC or flyback.

Notes:
From Linear Technology Design Notes. Although this article brings attention to the use of coupled inductors in SEPIC designs, many of the newer SEPIC design articles take the same approach. See other search results under Search by Topology, SEPIC.
