Forward-Converter Design Leverages Clever Magnetics Part 1

by Carl Walding, Field Applications Engineer, Fairchild Semiconductor, Chicago, Power Electronics Technology, Jul 01 2007

Focus:
Originally developed as a power supply solution for a set-top box application, a dual-output 130-W forward converter uses synchronous rectification and a coupled output inductor to achieve high efficiency and low cost. The design, which is built around the FS7M0880 current-mode PWM controller IC, is described in detail. Part 1 discusses design requirements, why the forward topology was selected, choice of transformer-reset scheme, input-rectifier filter design, primary-side calculations, and transformer design.
