A Monolithic Switching Regulator with 100mV Output Noise

by Jim Williams, Linear Technology, Vendor website, Oct 01 1997

Focus:
The operation of the LT1533, a monolithic switching regulator designed to produce low noise operation, is described in detail. Various buck and boost circuits based on the LT1533 are presented and techniques for measuring switcher output noise are given. An appendix titled, "A History of Low Noise DC/DC Conversion" delves into techniques used in oscilloscopes to generate high voltages while minimizing harmonics. Another appendix titled," SPECIFYING AND MEASURING SOMETHING CALLED NOISE" discusses the effect of measurement bandwidth on switching noise measurements and how vendors may misuse this specification to mislead customers. Selection criteria for linear post regulators are also discussed. Appendix J, "MEASURING EMI RADIATION," which was written by Bruce Carsten describes an EMI Sniffer Probe that locates and identifies sources of EMI in electronic circuits.
