Focus:
On September 30, 2008, the Department of Energy's (DOE's) Energy Star program for solid-state lighting (SSL) luminaires went into effect. (A luminaire is a complete lighting unit including lamp, reflector, physical housing and other components.) Under this program, luminaires used for general lighting (as opposed to signage) in indoor or outdoor and residential or commercial applications are eligible to qualify for the Energy Star rating. The requirements for Energy Star approval have a direct impact on the design of power supplies for luminaires and those requirements are discussed in this article.
