28-V military systems are subject to MIL-STD-461E EMI requirements and MIL-STD-704 and MIL-STD-1275 transient immunity requirements. An overview of these standards is given including details on the various revisions and tips are provided for achieving compliance when using a power solution based on Vicor's MIL-COTS VoI Chips. MIL-STD-461E addresses conducted emissions, conducted susceptibility, radiated emissions, and radiated susceptibility. Focusing on MIL-STD-461E CE102 conducted emissions requirements, the app note describes the measurements needed to characterize system performance, and a methodology for EMI filter design to achieve compliance. The use of purchased filter modules to ease compliance is also discussed. MIL-STD-704 addresses transient immunity while MIL-STD-1275 addresses surge and spike immunity. A discrete design clamp circuit to meet MIL-STD-704A is presented. The use of purchased filter modules to meet these standards is also discussed.
