Focus:
As a result of leakage inductance in the flyback transformer, flyback converters produce transient voltage spikes on the drain of the power MOSFET and at the secondary rectifier. Passive dissipative voltage snubbers can suppress these spikes, reducing stress on the power MOSFET and rectifier for improved reliability while also enhancing converter efficiency. This application note describes the uses and design of four types of passive dissipative voltage snubbers---the RCD voltage snubber, the RCD clamp, the rate-of-rise control RCD snubber, and the simple RC snubber.
