Focus:
A hybrid converter topology combines elements of boost and flyback converters to produce a high-voltage output from a low-voltage input, while achieving a small design size. This topology produces higher output voltages than a standard boost converter with a lower-voltage MOSFET switch, making it possible to generate high-voltages using boost converter ICs with an integrated power MOSFET. The operation of this topology is explained including discussion of output ripple, efficiency, and transformer selection. An example design presented here generates a 75-V bias for avalanche photodiodes (APDs) while operating from a 2.5-V input. This design is based on the MAX1605 boost converter IC, but the topogy can be applied with other boost converters and may be used to generate higher output voltages.This topology may be implemented using either an autotransformer or inductor and experimental data is presented to contrast the performance of transformer-based versus inductor-based designs. In addition to producing bias for APDs, converters using this topology are suited for powering piezoelectric transducers (PZTs), vacuum fluorescent displays (VFDs), and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS).
