Focus:
A procedure described here simplifies the design of the output stage of high-frequency lamp ballasts. The procedure relies on commonly available fluorescent lamp specifications supplied by the lamp manufacturer, rather than hard-to-find high-frequency lamp data. Designers can use this procedure to predict lamp operating points including pre-heat, ignition, and running conditions for lamps of different geometries and wattages. Benefits of this procedure include faster ballast design including a reduction in the time required to size a ballast for different lamps, and also an ability to optimize ballast size and cost. The procedure is demonstrated with a ballast design example based on the IR21571 controller IC, which powers a 36W/T8 lamp.
