High-Frequency Automotive Power Supplies

Focus:
The use of high-frequency switching regulators is desirable in automotive applications because it allows the shrinking of voltage regulator circuits. However, switching regulator ICs used in automotive designs must be able to withstand a number of overvoltage conditions, implying the need for ICs with high-voltage capability. But high-frequency switching and high-voltage capability are difficult to achieve in the same IC. This application note presents techniques for combining low-voltage, high-frequency switching regulators with external protection circuitry that enables the low-voltage switching regulators to function reliably in automotive applications. Article includes discussion of the causes of steady-state and transient overvoltages and OEM requirements for transient voltage suppression (conducted immunity tests), which are based on the ISO7637 standard.
