Focus:
A variety of techniques are available for driving LEDs in automotive interior lighting, front, and tail lights. These include current-limiting resistors, linear regulators, and switching regulators such as buck, boost, buck-boost, and SEPIC. The pros and cons of these methods are discussed. With that as background, the article discusses a number of issues related to driving LEDs in automotive applications such as driving LEDs from high voltages, how to control noise generated by switching regulators, and temperature compensation of LEDs. Also discussed are requirements for temperature compensation in red GaAs LED taillights and brightness control in stop/taillight combinations.
