Inverter Design Shines in Photovoltaic Systems

by Eric Zhang, Senior Technical Marketing Engineer, Fairchild Semiconductor, Shanghai, China, Power Electronics Technology, Jul 01 2008

Focus:
Developed for use in grid-connected solar energy systems, a current-source inverter based on immittance converter theory and sine-sine pulse-width modulation (SPWM) is proposed. The proposed inverter topology, which uses high-frequency switching, promises several performance benefits including simple control, small size, low THD and high power factor. The topology also employs a new, cost-saving approach to maximum power point tracking. Principles of operation are described in detail and equations governing inverter operation are derived Experimental results for an inverter prototype are presented to verify the practicality of the proposed topology and control scheme.
