Stacked-Ceramic Caps Brave High Temperatures

by Scott Harris, Advanced Products Marketing Manager, AVX, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina , Power Electronics Technology, Aug 01 2007

Focus:
The SMX series stacked-ceramic capacitors were developed for power supply applications subject to extreme temperatures like those encountered in oil drilling and aerospace applications. These capacitors operate at temperatures up to 200 degrees C thanks to their use of a special dielectric that retains capacitance well over temperature and a high-temperature solder that holds the individual capacitors within each stacked capacitor to the device's lead frame. In addition, a proprietary process relieves the mechanical stress on the capacitors, enabling them to withstand shock and vibration. Specific uses for these capacitors include snubbers, input and output filters, dc-dc converters, and decoupling or bypass capacitors This article describes the performance of the stacked-ceramic capacitors, and compares their performance with other ceramics and wet tantalum capacitors.
