Input Overvoltage Protection (A Vicor Power Techtorial)

by Marco Panizza, European Applications Manager, Vicor , Vendor website, Dec 31 2008

Focus:
Video presents several methods of protecting a dc-dc converter module against overvoltage transients. Passive approaches such as LC filtering (an integrating network) and a Transorb diode (a clamping diode), and active approaches such as the M-FIAM module are explained. The M-FIAM module contains a series MOSFET that operates a as linear regulator to limit the voltage. The size advantage of the active approach is discussed. A setup for testing the effectiveness of different transient protection methods is presented and used to demonstrate the use of capacitive filtering (an integrating network), varistors, and an active transient protection module. The test setup simulates the types of transients seen by dc-dc converters in military vehicles, trains, or aircraft.
