Basic Switching-Regulator-Layout Techniques

by no author specified, Maxim Integrated Products, Vendor website, Mar 25 2004

Focus:
The performance of a switching regulator IC depends not only on the proper selection of supporting components (diodes, MOSFETs, resistors, and capacitors), but also on the proper layout of the printed circuit board (PCB). A poor PCB design can degrade regulator efficiency and accuracy, and lead to noise-related problems such as ground bounce, ringing, EMI, and jitter. This application note presents techniques for proper grounding and component placement, prevention of noise interference and reduction of parasitic capacitance and inductance.
