Testing Compliance to Energy Efficiency Standards

by no presenter specified, Power Integrations, Vendor website, Oct 29 2009

Focus:
Approximately 12 minute in length, this video presents a detailed procedure for testing the compliance of an external power supply with various global standards for energy efficiency. This can be used for pre-compliance testing prior to sending a power supply for the official tests. The test method is that cited by the U.S. DoE's Energy Star program, the California Energy Commission (CEC), and the European Commission Code of Conduct. Instructions include how to set up test equipment to achieve accurate results (and an explanation of what level of accuracy is required), measure input and output power, calculate efficiency from power measurements, determine the power rating of the supply under test, and use PI's Efficiency Compliance Calculator to check compliance with energy efficiency standards. Important details are included such as how to achieve thermal equilibrium before measurement, how to account for energy stored in the input bulk capacitor when measuring no-load power, and how to round the results of your calculations. Supplemental course notes provide a transcript of the video and extras such as how to calculate the integral input power of a power supply when input power varies over time.
