Replacing Schottky Diodes with Super Barrier Rectifier Diodes

by Taufik, Electrical Engineering Department, Cal Poly State University, USA, John Chiem, Diodes Incorporated, USA and Yong Ang, Diodes Incorporated, UK, Bodo's Power Systems, Feb 01 2009

Focus:
Super Barrier Rectifiers (SBR) developed by Diodes Inc. feature forward voltages (VF) like those of Schottky diodes, but with the higher reliability of epitaxial p-n diodes. SBRs can directly replace Schottky diodes in the secondary stages of ac-dc power supplies such as "silver-box" computer power supplies. This article presents data demonstrating how SBRs can increase power supply efficiency by 1% to 2.5%, lower diode temperature by up to 15 degrees, and provide greater avalanche rating in an 80Plus computer power supply (a multi-output two-switch forward converter).
