Focus:
This articles describes the challenges encountered when designing power magnetic components for operation at high switching frequencies and how planar magnetic components can overcome those challenges. Primarily, these challenges relate to limiting the magnetic component's losses as the switching frequency is raised. This article explains how the characteristics of planar magnetic components enable lower core and winding losses, and better thermal management versus conventional magnetics at high frequencies. Key magnetics design equations are used to explain each of the benefits of planar magnetics. Rules of thumb are given to quantify the benefits versus conventional magnetics and also to describe the operating conditions under which planar designs are typically used.
