A backgrounder on the Smart Grid, this article describes different visions for a Smart Grid by the IEEE and U.S. Dept. of Energy (DoE) and various initiatives for implementing a Smart Grid. Among the initiatives discussed are the U.S. Dept. of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology's (NIST) three-phase plan to speed creation of Smart Grid standards, the Electric Power Research Institute's (EPRI) efforts to develop Smart Grid standards and a standards roadmap, the IEEE's "P2030 Guide for Smart Grid Interoperability of Energy Technology…" and Intel's Open Energy Initiative. Also discussed are Smart Grid requirements and challenges and U.S, governmental efforts to encourage investments in Smart Grid technologies.
