Focus:
In this Power Design article, a circuit based on the LTC3780 controller IC implements a single-stage, single-inductor nonisolated, synchronous buck-boost converter with small size and high efficiency. Operating from a 36-V to 72-V telecom input voltage range, this buck-boost converter generates a 48-V output at 4 A (200 W). The converter's efficiency is greater than 95% over load and input voltage ranges, enabling operation without a heatsink or forced air cooling. This circuit includes a 100-V high-side driver that extends the input- and output-voltage range of the controller IC, making it suitable for telecom or automotive systems. Details of circuit operation relating to timing of gate-drive signals, required delay circuitry, and deadtime are discussed.
