Focus:
Digital power control and digital power management enable improved performance for dc-dc
converters in intermediate bus power architectures (IBAs) with benefits that extend over the
course of the converter's life cycle. In this 1500+ word article, the author uses Ericsson's
BMR453 dc-dc converter family to illustrate this discussion. As the author describes, digital
power techniques enable increased power density, higher efficiency, tighter voltage regulation,
programmability, monitoring and fault detection, and the converter's ability to dynamically
adapt to varying load conditions including load transients and light loads. There is some very
basic explanation of how these benefits are derived. The role of PMBus and its value to system
designers is discussed along with a description of Ericsson's PC-compatible evaluation kit for
the BMR453.
