Overpower Compensation for Current-Mode Supplies

by Christophe Basso, Application Manager, ON Semiconductor, Toulouse, France, Power Electronics Technology, Sep 01 2004

Focus:
The propagation delay associated with the internal circuitry in a PWM controller operating under current-mode control slows the controller's reaction to a short-circuit or overload condition. This may lead to unacceptably high levels of peak inductor current and output current. The addition of an offset voltage at the current-sense input of the controller provides overpower protection, compensating for the effect of the propagation delay.
