Focus:
In this 3.5 minute video, mechanical engineer Sam Wood discusses thermal management considerations when using hybrid dc-dc converters (such as those made by VPT) in an application. He describes the flow of heat in these conduction-cooled converters from die to substrate to baseplate, and the requirement that the baseplate be attached to a heatsink or chassis. The presenter also explains the role of thermal pads and things to consider when selecting them; and mounting considerations such as sizing of thermal pads, tightening of screws, and placement of holes. He illustrates these points by presenting examples of hybrid dc-dc converters mounted to a chassis or heatsink.
