An airplane's "black box," more properly known as an event data recorder, collects data about the operating conditions of the aircraft and records what the pilots were doing and saying right before an accident. This running log of what transpired just before a crash can be critical in determining the root cause of the incident. In electronic equipment, a complex system manager plays a similar role, providing fault logging and faster, more definitive failure analysis in networking, industrial control, medical, and communications applications. This article explains how to implement this black box functionality by using Maxim's complex system manager ICs to control and monitor power supplies and fans. The benefits of nonvolatile fault logging are outlined.
