Several years before the boom in interest in wireless power, this presentation addressed the topic of how to simulate magnetic fields in wireless power systems. It discusses methods for finding the optimum distance between primary-side coils, analyzing shielding problems, and developing a coupling model. It begins with some background on industrial applications for wireless power, then briefly discusses magnetic field characteristics and primary coil design before addressing optimization of coil separation distance, which includes discussion of field calculation methods and field simulation options. An example of a field simulation tool shows the type of information it calculates. The presentation goes on to explain shielding effects and analysis with example results obtained from the Maxwell simulation tool. In the last section, a coupling model is given along with a test setup for verifying the model experimentally. Then, lab measurements are compared against simulation results obtained using the Maxwell and Simplorer tools.
