Focus:
Power supplies used in railway applications are subject to the European Standard EN50155. But as this article explains, this standard can be difficult to understand because it references 36 other standards. This article aims to demystify EN50155 by explaining and summarizing its requirements, both the general ones such as operating temperature range and shock and vibration and those specific to power supplies. The latter include requirements for input voltage, hold up time, and dc ripple factor. The article also discusses demands for EMC, surges, ESD, and transients, which are dictated by other standards such as EN5012-3-2, EN55011 and EN61000-4-2, 3, 4 , 5, and 6. EN50155’s checklist of mandatory and optional approval tests is also discussed. In various places, the author comments on power supply design and how his company (a power supply vendor) met certain requirements.
