Boost Power Converters Finally Get Some Respect!

by Bob Bell and Eric Lee, Texas Instruments, Phoenix, Ariz., How2Power Today, Jun 14 2013

Focus:
This article presents single- and dual-phase synchronous boost power converter designs based on a recently introduced boost controller, the LM5122. The operation of these converter circuits and the unique features of the controller are discussed here. In particular, boost converter operation with diode (asynchronous) rectification and with synchronous rectification are described to explain the loss-reducing benefits of synchronous rectification. Likewise, the use of interleaved dual-phase operation is described to explain the ripple-reduction benefits of interleaved operation. Within these discussions measured results for efficiency and simulated results for output-current ripple are presented. Some tips on output capacitor selection are also given. The article concludes by describing additional possible enhancements for fault protection of the boost converter. These enhancements may show up as features in future boost controller ICs.
