Although not specifically tailored to European railway applications, Vicor’s modular dc-dc converters can be applied in these applications through the selection of models with the appropriate specifications and the use of external circuit protection. This brief application note explains how designers can select dc-dc converter modules with suitable operating voltage ranges and apply transient voltage suppressors and surge protection to meet the European railway standards--IEC571 and RIA12. The note goes includes a detailed description and experimental results for an active circuit that provides transient and surge protection in accordance with these standards. In addition to explaining circuit protection requirements, the note briefly discusses requirements for operating temperature range, and vibration and shock. Although this app note is meant to aid designers in the selection and application of Vicor products, the information is general enough to be applied to dc-dc converters from other vendors as well.
