Focus:
Power factor correction (PFC) boost converters are used in ac-dc power supplies, electronic ballasts, and LED drivers. Each of these applications typically has a boost-type front end to perform the necessary power factor correction of the ac mains input current. This article discusses the application of a new control circuit, International Rectifier’s IRS2505, which enables simple and cost-effective solutions for (PFC) boost converter designs. The article reviews the basics of PFC boost circuit operation and describes a 90-W, universal-input boost converter design based on the IRS2505. The article provides design equations for calculating key circuit parameters and component values. It also presents data on circuit performance including dc bus voltage, inductor current and gate voltage; power factor and THD; and conducted EMI.
