Focus:
Having discussed PWM-based control in part 1, this part 2 continues the discussion of voltage
regulator control methods by discussing pulse-frequency modulation (PFM), hysteretic, and
constant on-time (COT), the so-called primary methods of control, as well as secondary methods
such as pulse-skipping, power-saving mode. It explains how these methods work and where they
are best used. The different methods are compared to PWM, and regulator options such as dual
PWM/PFM modes are noted. Differences in regulator efficiency in the different modes are
highlighted.
