Surviving Load Dumps On Military Vehicles

by no author specified, Vicor, Vendor website, Oct 01 2011

Focus:
This app note is an updated version of “Meeting Transient Specifications for Electrical Systems in Military Vehicles” (published in 2004). It presents a modified version of the transient/surge protection circuit presented in the older app note to enable Vicor’s 24-input dc-dc converters to meet the newer version (Issue 6) of the U.K. Standard DEF-STAN 61-5 (Part 6), which requires electrical systems in military vehicles to survive a load dump. After a brief explanation of the new spec, the modified protection circuit is described and experimental results are presented. The article concludes by noting how this circuit can be applied to Vicor newer dc-dc products—the VI Bricks and V*I Chips.
