Meeting Transient Specifications for Electrical Systems in Military Vehicles

by Arthur Jordan, Sr. Applications Engineer, Vicor, Vendor website, Aug 01 2004

Focus:
MIL-STD-1275B and DEF-STAN 61-5 (Part 6) Issue 5 impose requirements for transient protection of electrical systems in military vehicles. This app note describes add-on circuitry that will enable Vicor’s 2nd generation 24-V input dc-dc converter modules to meet these requirements. This add-on circuit, which is placed between the EMI filter and the input to the dc-dc converter, uses a few TransZorbs and a capacitor to suppress spikes together with a more complicated circuit to suppress surges. After describing the circuit and its operation as a whole, much attention is given to the criteria for selection and application of the series pass element, which will either be a power MOSFET with a large safe operating area, or an array of paralleled MOSFETs. Example device data and circuit test results are presented. The app note begins by describing MIL-STD-1275B and DEF-STAN 61-5 requirements for immunity against spikes and surges.
