Efficiency Standards for External Power Supplies

by no author specified, CUI Engineering , Digi-Key, Aug 06 2015

Focus:
With the U.S. Department of Energy’s Level VI energy efficient requirements for external power supplies scheduled to take effect in February 2016, OEMs who specify external power supplies for their products will want to know the details of the new requirements and what does or doesn’t apply to them. This article spells out those requirements clearly. It gives the specs for active efficiency and no-load power consumption for the different power ranges, defines the power supply types, explains what products are exempt (mainly supplies for battery chargers and medical equipment) and how to tell if a battery-powered product is exempt. The article also discusses other requirements like labeling, Level VI adoption outside the U.S., and the current status of the Level IV and V. But one of the most interesting parts here is the brief history of external power supply efficiency regulations including a timeline that lists all the global regulatory milestones going back to 2004.
