Using Z-transform method for AC Analysis

Focus:
Using Z-transforms to perform ac analysis of switching circuits represents a time-saving alternative to SPICE simulation and other methods. The NL5 software from Sidelinesoft offers the Z-transform method of ac analysis, but to use this method effectively, the designer needs to understand its requirements and limitations along with a basic understanding of discrete signal analysis. This article quickly explains the principles behind the method, how circuit response in the time domain translates to the z-domain and then to the s-domain (the ac frequency response); how the initial data can be obtained by sampling or integration of the circuit’s transient response; and what the benefits and limitations of this method are. The rest of the article provides examples of how the z-transform method is applied to various circuits (buck converter, digital filter and linear filter); how to handle problematic circuit or operating conditions (like DCM mode) and how to smooth out the response curves for readability.
