Meeting The Standby Power Specification In LED TVs With A Single Power Supply

The addition of new features is making it harder to meet requirements for low standby power consumption in LED TVs, while using a single switched-mode power supply (with no separate standby power supply.) However, new power supply controller ICs from ON Semiconductor incorporate numerous features to help reduce standby power consumption. This article discusses the benefits of these secondary- and primary-side controllers (NCP4328, NCP4352, NCP1249, NCP1256, NCP1239, NCP4354/55 and NCP1399) to the flyback converters used in power supplies up to 100 W (for screen sizes up to 42 inches) and in the LLC converters used at high power levels (for larger screen sizes.) Features include Eco and off modes that allow for different levels of voltage regulation in active and standby modes, active X2 capacitor discharge, high-voltage startup, special skip modes and the ability to disable the PFC stage.
