Sizing Your Power Converter's Magnetics (Part 3): Transformer Power Rating With An Input Voltage Range

by Dennis Feucht, Innovatia Laboratories, Cayo, Belize, How2Power Today, Jun 15 2016

Focus:
In part 1 of this article, the author explained how the power rating of a given inductor or transformer could be determined based on which one of the three PWM switch configurations it was being used with. Furthermore, he derived the formulas for determining the required power rating for an inductor in each switch configuration when the power circuit operates from a fixed input voltage. This analytical approach offers certain advantages in terms of optimizing the size of the magnetic component. In part 2, the author performed a similar analysis and derived the formulas for determining inductor power ratings when the power converter operates from an input voltage range rather than a fixed voltage. Here, in part 3, the author does a similar analysis for transformers, deriving the formulas for determining the transformer power rating for each of the PWM switch configurations, again assuming an input voltage range rather than a fixed input voltage.
